LASG SENSITIZES GRASSROOT ON LASSA FEVER


The Lagos State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the State

Safety Commission today, held a One-Day sensitization programme on LASSA FEVER for stakeholders in Community Development Associations, Community Development Committees, Market Men & Women Associations, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Medical Officers and Environmental Health Officers from the 20 Local Governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas in the State, as part of efforts to contain the spread of the disease in Lagos.

Dr. Jide Idris, the State Commissioner for Health while addressing the large gathering at LTV blue roof, venue of the event, stressed that it is imperative to maintain good personal hygiene and keep ones environment clean if the spread of Lassa fever must be effectively contained.

He explained that four infected persons are presently being treated in the state and over 600 persons who have been in contact with the infected persons are presently on observation at government hospitals, adding that the state government has trained public and private medical workers on how to contain the spread of the virus as well as treat affected individuals.

Mr. Fouad Oki, Director General, Lagos State Safety Commission, in his remark, noted that the present administration has vowed to do everything in its power to prevent the spread of the disease.

He however maintained that all Lagosians must also support the

government in this task by ensuring that their homes and offices are kept clean at all times, stressing that what is actually required is a joint effort by the government and the citizenry in order to win the fight against the deadly disease.

Director of Health Education in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Omowunmi George, emphasised the importance of proper hand washing, saying that most diseases can be prevented by regular washing of hands with soap under running water.

She took the audience through ways of preventing and controlling Lassa fever while Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi gave the talk on the signs and symptoms of the disease as well as management and prevention.
