Yesterday the 6th of July, 2016 the Nigerian entertainment world was thrown into mourning following the death of Veteran Nollywood actress, Bukky Ajayi. She passed on in the morning after a battle with a heart-related illness.
Born Zainab Olubukola Ajayi on February 2, 1934 in Ibadan, Oyo State, Zainab started acting career in the 70s with popular series – The Village Headmaster after working as a television presenter and newsreader for several years. Her father helped to rouse her interest in theatre as a little girl by taking her to the cinemas regularly.
Zainab was born into a christian home but converted to Islam in the 80s and christened herself Zainab. She travelled to England in 1979 and studied there for six years after which she came back to Nigeria to work as a presenter at the now Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) in 1966.
The late actress has featured in several movies and series like Check Mate, Mother of George, Indecent Girl, Diamond Ring, Witches, Thunderbolt, Critical Assignment, Fuji House of Commotion and the recently concluded Africa Magic series, Hotel Majestic.
She is survived by three children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. One of her children an actor and musician Olakunle Fawole, popularly known as Abounce. He has several music albums to his credit and is one of the actors in ongoing Africa Magic series, Hush.
She has since been prayed yesterday according to Islamic rites.
Her death has indeed left a big hole in the heart of Nollywood. We pray that God gives the family the strength to cope with the loss of this great Gem.
