Lagos State Government has implored nurses in all the State-owned hospitals to be alive to their responsibilities such that the erroneous impression of lukewarmness believed to have pervaded the health sector could be reversed and corrected.

The Chairman of Lagos State Health Service Commission, Dr. Adebayo Aderiye made the plea at the opening session of a training programme for Nurses chosen from all General Hospitals and Public Health Centres in Lagos.

He disclosed that the training for nurses was a follow-up to previous training earlier held for Pharmacists and Doctors, stressing that the intention of the State government is to make sure that all health workers are given relevant training specific to their professions and work schedules.

According to him, the training was designed to remind the participants of their usual work schedules, acquaint them with innovations in the profession, equip them with new skills and expose them to the usage of some modern medical tools.

“As healthcare providers, we have to keep on learning and improving on what we do daily. We must strive to do things better than the way we did it yesterday hence the need for us to be periodically trained and retrained”, the Chairman restated.

Aderiye said that the training also arose from the fact that government identified the need for health givers to show concern and maximum care when dealing with health seekers, adding that “You should relate with those who have chosen any of our hospitals as their choice with a high level of professionalism, enthusiasm and humility”.

He expressed the hope that upon completion of the training session, delivery of services to the citizens would be greatly improved upon and the masses would have a changed perception about health care services as well as service providers in government-owned establishments.

Earlier, the Commissioner IV of the Commission, Mrs. Kemi Ogunyemi, thanked Governor Ambode for approving the training programme for the different branches of health professionals.

She charged the nurses to go to their various hospitals and impact their colleagues with the acquired knowledge in order to make the effect of the training far-reaching.
