Notes that the Lagos-Badagry Highway is a Federal Road which connects Nigeria to the Republics of Benin, Togo, Ghana through to Senegal and other neighboring countries, being the Nigerian section of the Trans–West African Coastal Highway that passes through many major federal establishments;
Also notes that its construction began during the Babatunde Fashola Administration and has been on for over a decade as extensive reconstruction of the Lagos portion of the 61-kilometre, 10-lane highway began in 2010, but lingering funding problems have compelled the contractors, the China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation to stop work on it;
Concerned that owing to its abandonment, the Highway, which is an economic hub of the ECOWAS sub-region has been cut in many major places and there can be no better description of hell than what residents of Okokomaiko, Igbo Elerin, Iba Estate, Ijanikin, Satellite Town and Festac town areas of Lagos State go through, and those who go to buy goods at Badagry and neighbouring countries now find it difficult to transport their wares without incurring losses;
Also concerned that vehicles spend several hours on the road and sometimes containers fall in worse parts of the road, thus making life difficult for the people and so many lives have been lost as many parts of the road is covered with road that can swallow cars and unquantifiable number of persons have been attacked by robbers who cash in on the heavy traffic build-up to dispossess motorists of cash, phones, laptops and other valuables;
- Urge the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and the Lagos State Government to ensure major upgrade and repair of the road by providing the needed funds for China Civil Engineering and Construction Corporation to complete the work.
- Mandate the Committees on Works and FERMA (when constituted) to ensure compliance.
Hon. Oghene Egoh Moved the Motion and it was Seconded by Hon. Abass Adekunke. Hon. Muraina Ajibola proposed that the Committee on Appropriations be mandated to also interphase with the relevant Agencies to ensure the Prayers of the Motion is attained. He also prayed the House that the Agency who awarded the contract of repair on the road be ascertained so as to ensure the House deals with the right quarters. As an infrastructure related Motion it wasn’t debated, but Amended, Voted on and Passed as Amended.
