Sunday, July 14, being the World’s tree planting day, the Executive Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Wasiu Ayodeji Adesina leads other stakeholders in Ikorodu division to observe the Tree Planting Sensitization Campaign, themed “Clean and Green is Our Perfect Dream”. The event was held at the Abbatoir along T.O.S Benson road, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Trees are integral occupants of a social/cultural environment. They are nature’s gift that aids a healthy living environment and a stabilized eco system.
The Keynote address of the Governor of Lagos State, H.E Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu was read by the Supervisor of Environment, Hon. Shakirudeen Showemimo.
He appreciated the sustenance of the Tree Planting initiative over the years from the foresight of the previous administrations of Lagos State to maintain a healthy environment as well as ensuring the wellbeing of the citizens.
He emphasized that all hands must be on deck to improve the aesthetics of the environment by adorning it with ornamental plants, beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees.
He appealed to those present to resonate it across the city of Lagos, that, as they mark their birthdays, celebrate their children’s graduation, whatever memorable event that they do, they should endeavor to plant a tree daily, and as many as possible for healthier living conditions, beautification and consumption.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mr Abiodun Bangboye who was represented by the Director Legal, Mrs Olubunmi Obadan appreciated the support of Lagosians from all walks of life who are passionately embracing the culture of tree planting in support of the state’s efforts towards a sustainable environment.
She urged every Lagosian to be alive to their responsibilities in transforming Lagos to a cleaner, greener, healthier and an environmentally sustainable entity.
In respect of the campaign, trees were planted at designated spots by dignitaries present at the occasion.
The vote of thanks was given by the Council Manager, Mr Kunle Dipe who advised all to emulate the simple act of planting a tree daily, and see it as a pride to do so by caring for the trees and also nurturing them to maturity for the benefit of mankind and a sustainable environment.
