WAEC workers threaten to strike on Oct 14

As of October 14, members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions working in West African Examination Council offices in Nigeria will withdraw their services.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that in a statement on Sunday, NASU General Secretary, Peters Adeyemi said the action became essential after the delay of WAEC management in reacting to prior letters from the union.

In the letters NASU listed review of the service system, including the need to develop more facilities for its employees, and management’s reluctance to enforce the ex-grata policy.

Adeyemi said none of the union’s letters to WAEC management had been responded to so far.

“I am therefore concerned about the nonchalance of WAEC leadership in dealing with these significant lingering problems, which could jeopardize the global campaign for decent work strategy and workers ‘ well-being in WAEC Nigeria.

“It is on this assumption that a period of 21 days from the date herein is provided to your leadership to address all the above-mentioned problems in a positive manner.

“Failure to do so would leave the union with no other choice than to direct our WAEC members across Nigeria to continue with a total strike by Monday, October 14,” read the declaration in part.

The union said that the review of the service scheme has been ongoing since 2013, without any favorable resolution, despite the favorable willingness of the union to negotiate collectively with the WAEC leadership on the issue.

The NASU scribe, who described the council stagnation level as worrying, said the scenario was a clear case of injustice to the employees concerned.
