No fewer than 6,000 youths are set to be trained in horticulture by the Lagos State government. They were drawn from the 57 local government and local council development areas of Lagos State.
Mrs. Abimbola Jijoho-Ogun, General Manager of the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), said this on Sunday while briefing journalists on the training at the agency’s headquarters in Ikeja.
She said the training was among the initiatives of the state government to create jobs for youths. Also adding that the programme was to get new set of skilled and semi-skilled workers for the “greening programme” of the state government.
Jijoho-Ogun said, “The training will equip participants with the necessary knowledge and practical skills that will make them to compete effectively and develop appropriate interest in horticulture entrepreneurship.
“The programme is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, and will run for two weeks with both theory and practical sessions. Each of the sessions will be handled by seasoned professionals in the field of environment and horticultural studies.”
The general manager revealed her optimism by stating that all participants would be adequately empowered at the end of the programme in line with the government’s commitment to job creation and poverty alleviation.
“The participants, on completion of the training, will be assigned to some of the established horticulturists, who are government contractors for two weeks internship. They will thereafter be empowered and deployed in all the state gardens and parks to complement the tree planting, beautification and landscaping projects of the state government,” she added.
