The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State chapter has described the visit of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s to Egypt for the on-going African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as insensitive, at a time the state faced two tragic incidents.

Mr Taofik Gani, the state party’s publicity, raised the issue in a statement he issued in Lagos on Sunday.

He said it’s very disappointing that the governor had to remain in Egypt at a time when the state is still mourning the pipeline explosion in Ijegun.

Gani pointed out that governor was expected to have cancelled his trip in order to visit the site to condole with the victims and community.

“Pictures of Mr Sanwo-Olu currently at the AFCON competition in Egypt went viral on social media, and it prompted provoking reactions from various quarters.

“While we do not condemn the governor’s gesture of watching AFCON and supporting the Super Eagles, we oppose the timing vehemently.

The PDP expected that the governor should have gone to visit the families of the deceased.

“We also expected him to visit those in hospitals who suffered serious burns and pay their medical bills.

“The presence of the governor in Egypt at this moment of boat loss and explosion is insensitive and we urge him to go back to do what is needed,” he said.

Gani said it was in good authority for the party that the Sanwo-Olu trip along with some All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftains cost the state N470m.

He described the journey as a waste of money from the taxpayers, stating that it was morally wrong in perspective of the state’s challenges.

The Secretary of Publicity called for attention to the issues of bad roads, gridlock and others, urging Sanwo-Olu to give priority to governance.

Reacting, APC State Assistant Secretary of Publicity, Mr. Abiodun Salami, told the Nigeria News Agency (NAN) that Sanwo-Olu was in Egypt as part of a delegation from the Federal Government, and the trip did not cost the state a penny.

He said the alleged cost for the trip of N470 m was the PDP’s imagination figure.

“These people aren’t realistic. How can you say that the governor spent N470 m on a journey as part of the delegation of the Federal Government?

”The allegations are all lies, the trip did not cost the state a penny.

“Sanwo-Olu is a lover of sports and that must have been a reason he was chosen as part of the delegation.

“On the Ijegun fire, everyone is sad and I can tell you that Sanwo-Olu, as a responsible governor, coordinates activities even from Egypt to ensure that things are in order in the community.

“For 16 years, the PDP failed the country and now they are raising bogus issues to smear a working government,” he said.
