Nigerians call for the end of SARS once again


Following the death of a young man at Osogbo due to a hot-chase by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, officials, Nigerians have once again cried out for the government to end SARS operations in the country. The man who died was reported to have had three of his siblings in the car with him, while the SARS officials chased after him on the suspicion that they might be ‘yahoo’ boys.

During the pursuit, the young man’s car somersaulted, leaving him dead and his siblings severally injured. The incidence has led to an outcry by different organisations such as Amnesty Int.Nig who states: “#EndSARS Protect Nigerians from atrocities of a brutal police unit operating with increasing impunity.”

Another organization, TIBMovement calls for a protest towards the ending of SARS. Their notice states: “Only a systemic change can #EndSARS . Join us at the barricade on #Oct1stProtest to demand a system that will put an end to SARS impunity, extortion and extra judicial killings. #RevolutionNow October 1st 2020, take it back.”

Some Nigerians and celebrates such as DJ Kaywise, as shown willingness to march towards the end of the organization in the country. The celebrity DJ, Kaywise took to twitter to ask: “Good morning. Please what’s the update on #EndSARS, are we matching or not?”

Human rights activist, Aisha Yesufu, however, commented that Nigerians are usually outraged for a short period when an issue of injustice occurs, which is why a positive change is yet to happen in the country, hence, extrajudicial killings of police units continues.

Different stories, and videos of how Nigerians have suffered unjustly at the hands of SARS officials continue to surface, while many use the opportunity to call for the end of SARS once again.

The minister of interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola and the governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola, is yet to comment on the building tension and civil unrest following the recent brutalization of Osun residents at the hands of SARS officials.
