Lagos govt sensitizes residents over proposed expansion of Lagos- Badagry expressway from 4-10 Lanes.


The Lagos state government has embarked on a sensitization programme with residents over the expansion of the Lagos -Badagry expressway from 4-10 lanes.

The sensitization programme which took place on July 1st was organized through the office of the Civic Engagement, headed by the S.A to the governor on Civic Engagement Princess Aderemi Adebowale at Eric Moore Yard site.

The programme had in attendance stakeholders and heads of various groups in the Lagos- Badagry axis, groups such as the National Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), CDAs, Market men and women, youth representatives and a host of others.

In her speech, the SA of Civic Engagement Princess Aderemi said the programme is aimed at sensitizing the public on matters that could either speed up the completion or hinder the project which has stalled for a while.

”This programme is aimed at engaging the motoring public and other stakeholders on matters that could hinder or mar the timely delivery of this all-important project. This sensitisation is being held in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, which has the primary responsibility for the supervision of the project”. she said.

She further stated the importance of the road to the state, Nigeria and West Africa at large hence the cooperation of the residents.

”This Expressway has also been described as the ‘Gateway to Nigeria’ as it is a major access route into the nation from neighbouring countries in West Africa such as Benin Republic, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Gambia, and Guinea, to mention but a few. Furthermore, the Badagry Division of Lagos State is no doubt one of the most prefered tourist destinations in Nigeria and holds huge economic potential for Lagos State if properly and adequately harnessed. For this to be achieved, a good and accessible road is a must for the axis”. Princess Aderemi said.

Princess Aderemi urged the public and residents to cooperate with the contractors on site for speedy and timely delivery of the project due to the economic and infrastructural benefits to the economy of the state.

”The imperative for the rehabilitation and upgrade of Lagos-Badagry Expressway. The benefit accruable from this project is just too enormous to not make concerted efforts in ensuring its timely delivery and prevent its abuse”.

Commenting on the sensitization programme, the CDC chairman in one of the areas commended the Lagos state government on road rehabilitation and reconstruction while advising residents to support the contractors to deliver the project on time.

Also commenting, was the heads of market called the Iya oloja and Baba Oloja also commended Governor Babajide Sanwolu for the laudable project but asked the government to ensure the project is sped up.

However, a resident by name Mrs Khadija advised the governor to take more stringent action on the public users of the road who are slowing down the project through throwing of waste on the road and also defacating on the road.
