‘Lagos exploring all avenues to stop domestic violence’


Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Lola Akande has disclosed that the State Government is committed to exploring all known avenues to nip the scourge of Domestic Violence in the bud.

Speaking at a One-Day Sensitization Programme, themed, “Prevention of Domestic Violence through Effective Communication” organized by the Ministry, Akande stated that the programme was being held as a panacea towards the eradication of Domestic Violence whether physical, sexual, emotional, economic, psychological or verbal.

She said the Ministry, in collaboration with the Primary Health Care Board (PHCB), Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) organized a Day Review Meeting and Adaptation of Gender Based Violence (GBV) Reporting Tools for all relevant stakeholders with the aim of fighting domestic violence by promoting a standard format for reporting it in the State.

Earlier, Mr. Praise Fowowe, the Guest Speaker at the event spoke on Management of Domestic Violence, saying that communication and dialogue should be explored to resolve family issues, rather than resorting to violence as this could prevent needless death.

He urged men to desist from beating their wives but see them as help mates and friends so as to create a team-centred family, society and country of our dream.

Also speaking at the event, Mrs Bukola Salami, Director, Office of the Public Defender, Lagos State urged women who are in abusive marriages to report to appropriate agencies to get help and safeguard their lives.

She noted that the Office of the Public Defender is available to provide free Legal services to defenseless citizen in the State, urging the public to be their brother’s keeper by reporting cases of domestic violence noticed in their neighbourhood.
