We did not electronically communicate results – INEC Chairman

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu clarified why the results of the last general election couldn’t be transmitted electronically, contrary to the claims of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and its last presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku and the PDP, are challenging the result of the last presidential election before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT), asserted that they won the election on the basis of certain results obtained from a certain server, to which they said that INEC had transmitted the election results.

At the resumption of the PEPT trials on Tuesday morning, lawyer for Prescient Muhmmadu Buhari, Alex Izinyon (SAN), played a video in which INEC chairman said his commission was unable to transmit results electronically due to insufficient communication facilities / coverage in the country and the cyber security challenge.

Izinyon also tendered a digital video disc (DVD) containing the Yakubu interview given to a private television station in which he gave information of the difficulties of electronically transmitting results.

The DVD was admitted as Exhibit: P85, while the certificate of compliance, tendered with it, was admitted as Exhbit: P86
