Sunday Igbinovia, Ogechi Iheanacho claim 7th Oba Elegushi Lawn Tennis Championship, praise sponsors of the event.


Vetran Lawn tennis player Sunday Igbinovia and her partner Ogechi Iheanacho on Saturday defeated the pair of Yinka Abiola and Bolaji Olawepo 6-4, 3-6 and 10-7 to claim the seventh edition of the Oba Elegushi Tennis Championship at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.

The Blind Double tournament which was sponsored by the Elegushi of Ikate Kingdom, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, (Kusenla III) witnessed a large turn out.

Speaking at the event, Oba Elegushi thanked Almighty Allah for the success of the event while promising to expand the event next year with the inclusion of juniors which will breed future talent.

The Ikate Monarch also promised to concentrate more on younger ones while promising to sponsor them locally and internationally.

“Next years event will include more younger players and may be we can discover our own Serena Williams”

“We will ensure we have a bigger competition next year and include the younger generation because tennis is played across all ages and we must improve on what we have done this year”, Elegushi stated.

The tournament, which lasted for one week, had 42 players competing for honours. There was trophy and medal presentation to the winners, runners up as well as other players who participated in the tournament.

Speaking after the medal presentation, the winners sunday Igbinovia and her partner, Ogechi Ihenacho applauded Oba Saheed Elegushi for sponsoring the events while calling on other coporate bodies to emulate the monarch.

The well-attended event was witnessed by Monarchs, political office holders and community leaders which included The Oniru of Iru Land Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, the Elejigbo Of Langbasa Oba Hafeez Badiru, the Head of Service Lagos State Mr Hakeem Muri- Okunola, The commissioner for Home Affairs Hon Anofiu Elegushi ,the Deputy Majority Leader of the Lagos State House of Assembly and Hon Noheem Adams, House of House of Representatives Hon Jide Obanikoro, Executive Chairman Eti-Osa East LCDA Hon John Campus, Hon. Noheem Adams of the Lagos State House of Assembly and a host of others.
